Aston Villa are plotting a move to re-sign Man United defender Axel Tuanzebe, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
Dean Smith’s side are in the market for a new senior centre-back this summer to replace Bjorn Engels, who is set to be sold in the upcoming window after dropping down the pecking order.
A Villa source has told Football Insider that the club are lining up a potential move for Tuanzebe, 23, after making him one of their top targets.
He fits the profile the recruitment team are seeking of a proven defender with Premier League experience who also has the potential to improve.
Tuanzebe has been on the fringes at United this season, making 15 appearances across all competitions but only one top-flight start.
He has a year remaining on his contract at United, who also have the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months.
Tuanzebe spent the 2018-19 season on loan at Villa and was a key player in their promotion campaign.
He made 24 Championship starts among 30 appearances that term and made a strong enough impression for Villa to look to take him back.
It is likely that a fee of around £7million will be enough to convince United to sell, especially if Tuanzebe pushes hard for a move.
Tyrone Mings and Ezri Knoza are firmly established as the first choice centre-back pairing at Villa with Kortney Hause as back-up.
Mings has started 31 of Villa’s 32 Premier League matches this season, while Konsa has also started 29.
