Aston Villa have submitted a loan offer for Southampton star Jan Bednarek, sources have told Football Insider.

The Midlands giants are working on a deal for the Poland international as they look to secure a replacement for injured Diego Carlos.

Villa are keen to take Bednarek, 26, for the season rather than commit to a permanent deal.

On Tuesday (16 August) sources told Football Insider that Carlos is expected to be out for the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon.

Aston Villa announced on Monday (15 August) the defender will undergo surgery on the injury sustained in last Saturday’s (13 August) win over Everton.

Bednarek, whose current deal expires in the summer of 2025, was not involved during his side's 2-1 win over Leicester City on Saturday (19 August) after starting in the Saints' previous two Premier League games.

He was a key figure in the Saints' 2021-22 season, making 31 Premier League appearances.

He also scored four goals during that campaign, as Southampton finished 15th.

Since joining Southampton from Lech Poznan in July 2017, Bednarek has made a total of 152 total appearances for the club.

Villa lost their second game of the season on Saturday as they were beaten 3-1 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

In the absence of Carlos, Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa started the game.

Steven Gerrard's side are next in action against Bolton in the EFL Cup on Tuesday (23 August).
