Sources: Barcelona plot surprise raid for Chelsea teenager Maatsen

Barcelona are plotting a shock raid for Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen, Football Insider understands.

The left-back, 19, has been earning rave reviews on loan at Coventry this season and he is highly regarded at Chelsea.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Maatsen is on the radar of Barcelona going into the January window as they eye up a potential move.

The rising star, who joined Chelsea as a teenager from PSV Eindhoven, has a contract at Stamford Bridge that runs until the summer of 2024.

Barcelona’s interest is a surprise as Maatsen is yet to make his full debut for Chelsea and has only shone in the Football League to date.

The left-back’s sole senior appearance for the Blues came against Grimsby Town in the League Cup back in 2019.

He made a 24-minute cameo as a substitute under then-manager Frank Lampard.

The former Blues boss included the youngster in two other matchday squads.

Maatsen has since spent time on loan at Charlton Athletic and Coventry City.

He made 34 league appearances with the Addicks during the 2020-21 campaign as they finished seventh in League One.

His performances at The Valley earned him a temporary switch to the Championship with Coventry this summer.

The Netherlands under-21 international has played 21 times across all competitions for the Sky Blues.

Maatsen’s one and only goal for City came in a 4-1 win over high-flyers Fulham back in October.

The Dutch youngster’s performances have caught the attention of scouts from across Europe, including Barcelona.

While Maatsen has featured predominantly as a left-back, he featured all across the defence for Chelsea’s youth sides.
