Man City winger Luke Bolton is a target for Barnsley before Monday's transfer deadline, Football Insider understands.

The 22-year-old is out of contract at City this summer after coming through the ranks at the Etihad Stadium.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Championship strugglers Barnsley have made an enquiry about signing Bolton on a permanent deal.

Bolton, who can play as a winger or as a full-back, has had three spells out on loan at Wycombe Wanderers, Luton Town and Dundee United during the last three seasons.

He has made eight appearances for the Cityzens Under-23s this season, with one goal and one assist to his name.

His best spell came in the 2020-21 campaign while on loan at Dundee United.

Bolton contributed one goal and five assists in 30 games in Scotland.

The Stockport-born wide man has also been capped seven times by England's Under-20s.

City's Academy head coach Brian Barry-Murphy suggested Bolton was close to an exit in the summer transfer window.

Speaking in August, Barry-Murphy said: "Luke will be assessing his options over the next couple of weeks.

"He’s been adamant he wants to be playing as many games as possible."

Barnsley are in the market for reinforcements before the deadline closes on Monday.

Poya Asbaghi wants to add more creativity to his side, who are the lowest goalscorers in the Championship this season.

The Tykes remain bottom of the table having lost to Bournemouth on Saturday.
