Sources: Benitez set to be named new Everton manager today
Rafael Benitez is set to be named the new Everton manager today after late-night developments, Football Insider has learned.
The former Liverpool and Newcastle United boss has reached an agreement with the Goodison Park hierarchy after being offered the job.
An Everton source has told Football Insider that the plan is for Benitez, 61, to be announced as the club’s manager today.
That would represent a quick turnaround given that only a few days ago Nuno Espirito Santo was on the verge of landing the job.
But an agreement could not be reached, with one stumbling block the size of the backroom staff that the Portugese wanted to take with him to Goodison.
Everton have continued to talk to other managers in the interim, including Antonio Conte, and negotiations with Benitez have intensified in recent days.

The Spaniard’s main family home is in Merseyside and he does not regard his strong Liverpool connections as a hurdle to taking the post.
Benitez last managed in the Premier League at Newcastle, where he was also a hugely popular figure with fans, before moving in 2019 to China for a spell at Dalian Professional.
He has been back in England since leaving China in January and has been lined up by Newcastle United should the Saudi-led takeover go through as expected later in the summer.
But the north-east giants will now have to look elsewhere as Everton look set to beat them to the Spaniard.
The prospect of Benitez taking over is unlikely to be well received by a significant section of Everton supporters.
He managed Liverpool for six years, led them to the Champions League in 2005 and called his would-be employers a “small club” after a Merseyside derby in February 2007.
