Blackburn Rovers are in advanced talks to sign Peterborough United star Sammie Szmodics for £2.5million, sources have told Football Insider.

Rovers have been chasing the 26-year-old all summer as they look to bolster their attacking options and have tabled multiple bids.

Blackburn have now agreed a fee rising to £2.5million for Szmodics and the player is now set for a medical at Ewood Park as well as to discuss personal terms.

The versatile attacker scored seven goals across 39 appearances in all competitions as Peterborough were relegated to League One at the end of last season.

His only other Championship experience came for Bristol City in the 2019-20 season, making three league appearances before being shipped out to The Posh on loan.

Blackburn have moved to keep Szmodics in the second tier as they plot a promotion charge under new boss Jon Dahl Tomasson.

The 26-year-old has been a star performer in the lower echelons of the Football League - having notched 54 goals and 27 assists across almost 200 outings in Leagues One and Two.

The 5ft 6in attacker is contracted at the Weston Homes Stadium until June 2024.

Szmodics can play as a striker, attacking midfielder - as well as on both flanks.

Blackburn have made just two additions during the off-season as they prepare to kick their campaign off against QPR on Saturday (30 July).

The Lancashire club could lose Ben Brereton Diaz this summer with Premier League clubs reportedly targeting the Chile international.

Szmodics has scored twice in pre-season for Peterborough - with their season also getting underway this weekend.
