Sources: Brighton beat Aston Villa and Wolves to signing of Blackpool sensation Penman
Brighton have beaten Aston Villa and Wolves to the six-figure signing of Blackpool sensation Charlie Penman, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The centre-back, 16, announced this week that he has joined the Seagulls’ academy.
A recruitment source has told Football Insider further details of the deal that has taken the rising star to Brighton from Blackpool.
Aston Villa, Wolves and Southampton also had a strong interest in Penman and spoke to him about contract offers.
But he was won over by Brighton’s sales pitch and has signed a scholarship deal that will be converted into a professional contract when he turns 17.
Brighton are also set Blackpool a compensation fee of around £300,000 for Penman.

Penman experienced a rapid rise through the ranks at Blackpool.
In January he made his debut for the Seasiders’ Under 18 side aged just 15.
He came on in the second half as the Under 18s faced Salford City in the EFL Youth Alliance league.
Penman will now continue his development on the south coast after agreeing terms with Brighton.
Brighton are currently 7th in the Under 18 Premier League after a mixed start to the season.
The Seagulls have won, drawn and lost their opening three league games but sit clear of Penman’s fellow suitors Aston Villa.
Wolves’ youth side have the same record as Brighton but they are playing in the northern section of the Under 18 Premier League.
