Sources: Burnley plot raid for Holgate after Everton stance revealed

Burnley are plotting a January raid for Everton defender Mason Holgate, Football Insider understands.

Sean Dyche’s side are in the market for defensive reinforcements amid doubts over the futures of James Tarkowski and Ben Mee.

A Burnley source has told Football Insider that Holgate, 25, is on their radar this month and going into the summer window.

Tarkowski, 29, and Mee, 32, are both out of contract in the summer although the older man has a 12-month option in his deal.

This site revealed last Friday (31 December) that Everton will listen to offers for the versatile defender as they look to raise cash to stay in line with the Premier League’s finance rules.

The Merseysiders are on the verge of following the capture of left-back Vitaly Mykolenko from Dynamo Kiev with the signing of right-back Nathan Patterson from Rangers.

He has headed down south to undergo a medical and finalise contract terms after the Glasgow giants accepted a bid of £12million rising to £16m with add-ons.

Holgate has started Everton’s last three matches after taking advantage of an injury to Yerry Mina.

He was part of a three-man defence in Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Brighton that also included Ben Godfrey and Michael Keane.

Holgate, who has a contract with Everton that runs until 2025, has made 10 appearances in all competitions this season.

The former England Under-21 international has played 121 times in total for the Merseysiders since signing from Barnsley in 2015.

In other news, the brilliant nickname Bill Kenwright had for ex-Everton manager can be revealed.
