Sources: Burnley working on re-signing Chelsea star Ian Maatsen

Burnley want to bring on-loan Chelsea star Ian Maatsen back to the club for their return to the Premier League next season, sources have told Football Insider.

It is believed the Clarets are open to signing the 21-year-old on another loan – or even in a permanent move.

Maatsen has enjoyed a hugely successful temporary spell at Burnley with Vincent Kompany’s side returning to the top flight at the first time of asking.

With promotion secured and the Championship title virtually wrapped up, attention can now turn to summer transfer business.

Maatsen has notched four goals and six assists in 37 games across all competitions for Burnley this term.

Despite the left-back’s impressive form in the second tier, sources have told Football Insider that it is unlikely he will have a long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have two experienced, international left-backs to call on already – with Marc Cucurella and Ben Chilwell set to fight for a starting berth when a new manager is appointed.

Maatsen will have just 12 months remaining on his Blues contract in June, and it is believed he could be a player the Londoners look to cash in on as they look to balance the books.

The Netherlands Under-21 international is keen to play regularly at a permanent home after successful loan spells at Burnley, Coventry and Charlton in recent seasons.

He has played just 24 minutes of senior football for Chelsea after coming off the bench against Grimsby in the League Cup in 2019.

Kompany and Burnley are also vying to sign another of their loan stars on a permanent basis.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (17 April) that the Clarets and Southampton are in talks over a permanent move for red-hot winger Nathan Tella.
