Sources: Celtic and Stoke City race to sign Alfa Semedo amid £1.3m reveal

Celtic, Stoke City and Bristol City are chasing Vitoria Guimaraes midfielder Alfa Semedo, Football Insider understands.

Portuguese side Vitoria are willing to sell the 24-year-old for £1.3million this summer.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Scottish champions Celtic and Championship duo Stoke City and Bristol City have all registered their interest in a deal for Semedo in this window.

News of his availability means a battle is now hotting up for his signature.

He is under contract until the summer of 2025 and has previous experience in the English Championship.

The Guinea-Bissau international spent time on loan with Nottingham Forest and Reading from Benfica before moving to Vitoria Guimaraes permanently last summer (2021).

He scored four times and provided three assists in 63 games in England’s second-tier across his time with Forest and Reading.

Celtic are in the market for a new defensive midfielder this summer after Nir Bitton left the club at the end of the 2021-22 campaign.

Ange Postecoglou has not added to the squad that won the Scottish Premiership title last term but Cameron Carter-Vickers and Daizen Madea have had their loan spells converted into permanent moves.

Semedo was in the Benfica youth ranks alongside Jota who also enjoyed a fruitful loan spell at Parkhead in 2021-22.

Portuegese outlet Record reported on Monday (20 June) that the Hoops are set to complete a £6.5million deal with Benfica for the 23-year-old to return on a permanent basis.
