Celtic have been given a boost in their bid to sign Scott McKenna after his Aberdeen teammate Sam Cosgrove rejected a £2.7million move to French side Guingamp.
The Dons are facing a cash crisis in the wake of the pandemic and are willing to listen to offers for their star man.
A Celtic source has told Football Insider that the club are keen on centre-back McKenna once again after previous offers for him were knocked back by Aberdeen.
The Scotland international is on the radar of the Hoops as they look to bring in a proven centre-back this summer.
Jozo Simunovic was released at the end of May and there are doubts over the future of Kristoffer Ajer, who is the subject of Premier League and Serie A club interest.
Celtic are hopeful that McKenna will be available for significantly less than the £7m fee agreed between Aberdeen and Stoke City in January of last year.
A deal could not be finalised and it collapsed at the eleventh hour just as the window was shutting.
Cosgrove had also been on the verge of the exit after Aberdeen accepted a £2.7m bid from Guingamp before the player opted against the move.
The Dons are battling the financial hit caused by Covid-19.
Players and staff are undergoing a process of wage cuts, while the club is facing up to a potential £10m shortfall in income.
Aberdeen are braced for bids for McKenna but they are unlikely to get £7m for him.
The Scotland international has three years remaining on the contract he signed in 2018.
He has graduated from the Dons youth ranks to make 112 appearances for the first team, 35 of which came in the recently-terminated campaign.
In other Celtic news, it can be REVEALED there has been a huge development in the club’s new contract talks with Odsonne Edouard.
