Celtic want to wrap up the signing of Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers by the end of the week, Football Insider has learned.
Manager Neil Lennon has given the green light for the concerted pursuit of the 27-year-old and wants him to play a key role in the club’s Champions League qualifying campaign.
A Celtic source has told Football Insider the club are in talks with Brentford over signing Sawyers and those are expected to advance this week.
The Championship outfit are reportedly holding out for a £2.5million fee for the versatile midfielder, who made his name in English football in attacking roles before mainly settling into a deeper central role in the last year.
As revealed by Football Insider, Celtic are ready to offer Sawyers a bumper long-term contract to push the deal over the finish line.
The Glasgow giants’ desire to finalise the transfer is also partly a consequence of the fear they could be beaten to his signing by other clubs in England’s second tier.
Championship big guns Stoke City and West Brom are also interested in signing Sawyers, who has entered the final 12 months of his contract at the Bees.
The 26-times St Kitts & Nevis international has been a key player for Brentford since signing from Walsall in the summer of 2016 on a free transfer.
He has played 135 times for the London club, scoring eight goals and providing an impressive 20 assists.
Sawyers made 41 league starts among 46 appearances for Brentford last season and took over as the regular captain last autumn.
