Sources: Charlton Athletic submit bid for ex-Newcastle United star Shane Ferguson

Charlton have submitted an offer for Rotherham United midfielder Shane Ferguson, sources have told Football Insider.

Ferguson, 31, is in the final six months of his contract at Rotherham and new Charlton boss Dean Holden has made a move for the Northern Ireland international.

Holden is keen to bring a new attacking midfielder to bolster his squad at the Valley and he is a fan of left-sider Ferguson.

The former Newcastle and Birmingham winger has made 14 appearances in the Championship for Rotherham this season and provided two assists.

Ferguson joined the Millers in the summer of 2021 and has made 55 total appearances for the club.

Those outings have yielded one goal and seven assists.

The attacker has featured far less this season than last, only starting seven league games this term compared to 25 league starts in 2020-21.

Ferguson joined Rotherham after five years as a regular starter at Millwall.

He helped the Lions reach the League One playoffs during the 2017 season as the club secured promotion to the second tier.

Ferguson was never a regular at Newcastle, making 32 senior appearances in the seven years after he made his senior debut.

He was twice loaned to Birmingham City before experiencing a temporary spell at Rangers in 2015 in which he failed to make an appearance in the league.

Charlton currently sit 18th in League One after a poor start to the season that has seen them win just five of their 23 games.

They are next in action against Portsmouth on New Year’s Day.

In other news, sources have told this site that five EFL clubs are in the race to sign Crystal Palace sensation John-Kymani Gordon in January.
