Sources: Crewe, Cheltenham, Rochdale and Hartlepool in race to sign Towler after Bristol City green light

EFL quartet Crewe Alexandra, Cheltenham Town, Rochdale and Hartlepool United are in a race to sign Bristol City rising star Ryley Towler, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The Championship outfit tied Towler down to a new three-year deal back in May.

Now a City source has told Football Insider that the club have given the green light to the 19-year-old going out on loan in the new season.

The midfielder made his first-team debut last season against Sheffield United in the FA Cup.

He made a further three senior appearances in the Championship before the end of the campaign.

The Robins have now decided to let the teenager head out temporarily in a bid to play regular first-team football.

His availability has led to interest from several clubs across the bottom two tiers of the Football League.

League One outfits Crewe and Cheltenham both see Towler as someone who could bolster their midfield options.

Meanwhile League Two duo Rochdale and Hartlepool are hoping to convince Bristol City and the player of a move to the fourth tier.

A versatile midfielder, Towler has also featured as a left-sided wing-back for City.

He has already spent time out on loan at non-league sides Frome Town and Taunton Town.

As well as his three league appearances last season, Towler was also an unused substitute for 23 Championship games.

Bristol City boss Nigel Pearson has already bolstered his midfielder this summer by signing Matty James and Andy King on free transfers.

In other news, Huddersfield Town have responded to formal Leeds United bid for Lewis O’Brien.
