Tottenham have accepted defeat in their attempts to prise Milan Skriniar from Inter Milan in this window, Football Insider understands.
Spurs have held extensive talks with the Serie A giants about recruiting the centre-back ahead of Monday night’s transfer cut-off.
A recruitment source has now told Football Insider that a potential deal is dead in the water.
The two clubs have been unable to agree a fee for Mourinho’s top central defender target.
It means that the Londoners will have to turn their attention to alternative targets in the final hours of the extended summer window.
Tottenham have made a number of bids for Skriniar but Inter have held out for a fee well in excess of £40million.
The 31-times Slovakia international has been keen to move to an elite Premier League club after three years at Inter.
But he is now set to remain at Inter for what will be a fourth season.
Skriniar has won back his place in Antonio Conte’s side for their last two Serie A matches after being left out of the opening-day win over Fiorentina.
The centre-back has subsequently operated on the right side of a three-man defence against Benevento Calcio and Lazio.
He joined Inter in 2017 and has made 130 appearances in all competitions.
