Sources: Critical update on Rangers bid to sign Josh Maja

Rangers are facing a new difficulty in their attempts to sign Josh Maja this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

This site has learned that Bordeaux have the option to extend Maja’s deal if they get promoted to Ligue 1 at the end of the season.

Rangers, Championship clubs and other teams in Europe are now watching to see what happens given how tight the current promotion race is.

The top two teams in France’s second division are promoted at the end of the season, with Bordeaux currently occupying second spot.

The side are currently seven points behind leagues leaders Le Havre but are only one point clear of third placed Sochaux, two points off Metz and five points ahead of fifth placed Bastia.

Last month (17 February), Football Insider revealed that the Gers have a genuine interest in the striker as they prepare for a major overhaul of their attack in the summer.

The 24-year-old is out of contract in the summer after he joined Bordeaux from Sunderland in 2019.

He has spent the last two seasons on loan, initially at Fulham where he made 15 Premier League appearances and then spent the 2021-22 season with Stoke City.

This season, Maja has made 31 appearances for Bordeaux across all competitions and has scored 13 goals and provided four assists.

At the moment, the Gers look set to lose Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos from the front line in the summer when their contracts expire.

Although the Light Blues added Antonio Colak up front last summer, Michael Beale will be looking for more additions up front in the upcoming window.
