David Moyes is edging closer to the sack following a dreadful West Ham showing in their latest defeat, sources have told Football Insider.

The Scot, 59, has overseen consecutive losses against Brentford and Arsenal since the Premier League return and his job is under new threat.

Supporters were furious with the team’s performance in the 2-0 home defeat to Brentford on Friday night (30 December) and there were tens of thousands of empty seats at the London Stadium long before the final whistle as fans headed home early.

Moyes brushed aside speculation on the eve of the match about his position and insisted he has a strong relationship with co-owner David Sullivan.

Football Insider understands from well-placed sources at the club that the two do not see eye to eye on many issues, and the manager’s power base is not nearly as strong as it was.

As we first revealed here on 6 December, Moyes' position was always under threat going into the new year if he did not turn around the team's fortunes.

It is understood that Sullivan and the West Ham board will not hesitate to sack Moyes in the coming days if they believe he cannot edge them away from the relegation zone.

The Irons are 17th and one place above the relegation zone following their 11th defeat from 17 Premier League matches this season.

That is despite the Londoners spending a reported £161million in the summer transfer window - with a number of signings, like Gianluca Scamacca and Lucas Paqueta, yet to make their mark at the London Stadium.

Moyes staved off the threat of relegation after returning to the club in the 2019-20 campaign - before leading the Irons to European qualification in back-to-back seasons.

West Ham face Leeds United in their first engagement of 2023 on 4 January.
