Everton have set their sights on signing Mexico international Jorge Sanchez, Football Insider understands.

The right-back has impressed for his country at the Olympics and played a key role in their march to the semi-finals.

An Everton source has told Football Insider the club are keeping close tabs on Sanchez and are weighing up a move.

But the Merseysiders face competition from Premier League rivals Tottenham for the Club America star.

The defender would be ideally suited to the English top flight and is ready to follow several of his Mexico teammates to a top European team.

Sanchez has started all four of Mexico's games at the Tokyo Olympics.

After making it out of their group, Mexico thrashed South Korea 6-3 to set up a semi-final clash with Brazil.

That game is scheduled for Tuesday morning and Sanchez should start as long as he is fit.

The full-back made 37 appearances for Club America last season, scoring once and chipping in with two assists.

Everton have been looking to sign a replacement for Seamus Coleman as he nears the end of his career.

The Blues captain signed a new one-year extension this summer, keeping him at Goodison Park until 2023.

Coleman, 32, missed a large portion of last season through injury which left Carlo Ancelotti with a makeshift defence.

Similarly, Tottenham are in the process of rebuilding under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Spurs finished a disappointing seventh last season as their defence was questioned on numerous occasions.

This site revealed the North London side have already agreed personal terms with one defender this summer, Atalanta's Cristian Romero.
