Fleetwood Town have registered their interest in Sunderland winger Jack Diamond, sources have told Football Insider.

The attacker, 22, has yet to feature for the Championship giants this season and is well down the pecking order.

Fleetwood boss Scott Brown is keen to sign a wide forward before the close of the transfer window and Diamond is a top target.

The Black Cats have given the green light to him leaving this month.

Manager Alex Neil had promised (via ChronicleLive, 14 July) to give Diamond a "fair crack" during pre-season but now looks set to let the winger depart.

He made just three appearances for Sunderland last season before being loaned out to League Two side Harrogate - where he scored 14 goals in 45 outings.

Simon Weaver, manager of The Railwaymen, revealed earlier this summer (23 June) that his side have seen permanent and loan offers rejected for Diamond.

He penned a contract extension at the Stadium of Light in March 2021, pledging his future to the club until June 2024.

The 22-year-old has proved a versatile option during his career to date.

Diamond can play on both flanks, in attacking midfield, and through the middle as a centre-forward or second striker.

However, the arrivals of Ellis Simms, Jack Clarke, and Leon Dajaku have meant the Gateshead-born ace is unlikely to get a look in this term.

Sunderland have begun their Championship campaign with a win and a draw - leaving them second in the table.

Fleetwood have registered a victory and a loss in League One and are desperate to add quality following last season's brush with relegation.
