Swansea City midfielder Flynn Downes has agreed a five-year deal with West Ham, Football Insider understands.

The 23-year-old is completing a medical with the Premier League club on Thursday (7 July) as he puts the finishing touches to the £12million transfer.

A West Ham source has told Football Insider that the club are confident the deal will be completed by Friday night (8 July).

Downes will become the club's second big signing of the summer following the capture of Nayef Aguerd from Rennes in a £30m deal.

They have also completed a permanent deal for Alphonse Areola who spent the 2021-22 campaign on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Hammers are in desperate need of midfield reinforcements as Mark Noble has retired and Alex Kral has returned to Spartak Moscow after an unsuccessful loan spell in 2021-22.

A West Ham source told Football Insider earlier this summer (28 May) that they will also listen to offers for Tomas Soucek after a fallout with David Moyes.

Essex-born Downes told Swansea club media earlier this year (2 January) that he was a West Ham fan and came from a family of Hammers.

He moved to the Welsh outfit last summer (2021) from Ipswich Town and established himself as a key part of Russell Martin's side.

Downes ended the 2021-22 campaign with 39 appearances across all competitions and he even wore the captain's armband on occasion.

During his time at Ipswich, he also enjoyed a loan spell at Luton Town in 2018 as they won promotion from League Two.
