Ian Maatsen could leave Chelsea on loan in January if he pens a new long-term deal at the club, sources have told Football Insider.

Maatsen's current contract expires in June 2025 after a 12-month extension clause was activated by the Blues recently.

it is believed Chelsea are keen to protect their asset by tying him down to a new agreement.

But Maatsen has recently spoken out about his lack of playing time - admitting he is “keeping his options open” and preparing for a "difficult decision" if his circumstances don't change.

The defender has made just two starts in nine total appearances this season.

Maatsen enjoyed a successful loan at Burnley last season as they were promoted back to the Premier League, notching four goals and six assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

And it is believed he could head out on loan once again in the winter window, should he put pen to paper on renewed terms at Stamford Bridge.

Maatsen has previously also had loan spells at Charlton and Coventry.

Another option for the Netherlands Under-21 international is a possible move to Man City amid widespread links with the treble-winners in recent months.
