Sources: Jamal Lewis set to be second Newcastle United player axed from squad after deal collapse

Jamal Lewis is set to join Ciaran Clark in being left out of Newcastle United’s revised 25-man Premier League squad, Football Insider understands.

This site revealed earlier today (1 February) that Clark, 32, was to be omitted from the club’s league roster to make room for January signings and his defensive teammate will suffer the same fate.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Lewis, 24, rejected loan offers from Stoke and Birmingham City on deadline day.

Newcastle were open to letting the left-back and Clark leave before Monday’s transfer deadline to free up space in their squad.

However, the duo snubbed the opportunity to leave and will remain at St. James’ Park until the summer.

Toon manager Eddie Howe needs to omit three players currently in his squad to make space for the five new January signings.

Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Dan Burn all came through the door last month.

Howe has decided Clark and Lewis will be the fall guys.

The pair are set to drop down to the club’s Under-23s for the second half of the season.

Lewis has played just six times this term, with four of those starts.

The full-back put pen to paper on a five-year Newcastle deal after arriving from Norwich in September 2020.

Clark has made 13 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies this season.

He has 18 months left on his contract.
