Sources: Klopp tells Liverpool to offer James Milner new deal

Jurgen Klopp is pushing the board at Liverpool to offer James Milner a new deal, sources have told Football Insider.

The versatile 37-year-old is currently set to be out of contract this summer after signing a one-year extension with the Reds last summer.

Klopp is a huge admirer of Milner and is pushing the Liverpool board to replicate the offer and table another one-year extension for the 2023/24 season.

The German boss believes Milner’s leadership and off-pitch presence is crucial to Liverpool’s dressing room atmosphere and believes he would be a huge loss for the club should he leave this summer.

Alongside his off-field contributions, Milner continues to be a valuable member of the playing squad with 32 appearances across all competitions this season.

He has also contributed two assists this campaign.

When Klopp arrived at Anfield in 2015, Milner was one of his first signings through the door, joining on a free transfer from Man City.

The Liverpool boss is a huge admirer of Milner, and he recently told reporters that he wants to keep playing.

“Milly [Milner] wants to keep playing,” said Klopp. “You can’t judge him normal for his age. He is 37, doesn’t look a day like this when he is in training.

“He is an incredibly important player.”

Talks are yet to be opened, but Liverpool are optimistic that a deal could be struck quickly one negotiations begin.
