Sources: Leeds in advanced talks to agree Webber deal - but there's a twist
Stuart Webber is in advanced talks to join Leeds United – but may not join until after the summer, sources have told Football Insider.
Norwich City announced on Tuesday that the sporting director, 39, is to leave the club but will first work through a notice period to ensure a smooth transition.
This came hours after Football Insider broke the news that Leeds had opened talks with Webber about becoming their permanent replacement for Victor Orta.
Discussions between Webber and United are now believed to be an advanced stage, with the expectation growing that an agreement can be reached.
But the complications over the sporting director’s Norwich contract mean the Yorkshire giants are likely to have to put in place a short-term arrangement for their summer business, before Webber would be able to take on the role at Elland Road.
Leeds are in the market for a new director of football after announcing the departure of Orta at the start of May in a move first revealed by Football Insider.
The Spaniard was let go by United at the same time as Javi Gracia with the pair paying the price for a dire run of form that left the club deep in trouble.
The Whites finished 19th in the Premier League and were ultimately relegated to the Championship for the 2023-24 season.
Leeds are on course to be under new ownership after the 49ers Enterprises agreed a full takeover of the Championship club on Friday night.
In buying out Andrea Radrizzani, the United States-based 49ers will up their holding in Leeds from 44 per cent to 100 per cent control.
Although the deal still needs to pass the English Football League’s owners’ and directors’ test, a process expected to take a number of weeks, the requirement is regarded as a formality.
