Sources: Leeds in fight to keep Roberts as he snubs new contract offer

Tyler Roberts has snubbed a Leeds United contract offer to throw his future up in the air ahead of the upcoming window, Football Insider has learned.

United have offered the versatile star, 22, a new long-term deal to replace his existing agreement, which expires next year.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Roberts has yet to accept the long-term offer on the table and that has put his future in doubt.

This has opened the door to Newcastle United and other clubs keeping tabs on Roberts’ situation.

Marcelo Bielsa is keen to keep the versatile attacker, who had made 12 consecutive Premier League starts before he was dropped for Saturday’s 4-0 mauling of Burnley.

The manager believes him not only capable of operating in the number 10 role he has mainly played in this season, but also able to drop back at number eight as well as in a centre-forward role.

That is why Bielsa has given the green light for Leeds to offer a new long-term deal to Roberts.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday that Roberts is attracting interest from Newcastle going into the summer window.

He is valued at around the £10million mark by Leeds given he has only 12 months left on his deal.

It would be a big blow for United to lose Roberts as well as Ezgjan Alioski, who has also failed to sign a contract extension offered by the club.

Roberts has been a regular for Leeds this season, with 14 Premier League starts among 32 appearances in all competitions.

He had been in the XI for 12 consecutive matches before being dropped to the bench for Saturday’s 4-0 win over Burnley.

Critics of Roberts, including ex-Leeds striker and Football Insider columnist Noel Whelan, say he lacks a clinical edge to his game and does not hurt opponents enough in and around the box.

The former West Brom man has yet to score this season and only provided two assists.
