Sources: Leeds United make move to sign Jamie Mercer

Leeds United are plotting a move to sign Aberdeen teenage sensation Jamie Mercer, sources have told Football Insider.

The centre-back, 16, has caught the eye of the Yorkshire giants and a number of other Premier League clubs after dazzling for Aberdeen’s youth sides.

Leeds are keen to strengthen their youth ranks and they see Mercer as a potential star in the making.

The left-sided centre-back has been a regular in Aberdeen’s Under-18s side this season and Leeds scouts have been making regular checks on him.

It is believed they have registered their interest in a potential deal as they look to sign him before the window opens.

A move for Mercer would not be Leeds’ first foray into the Scottish market.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (8 May) that the Whites have reached a full agreement with Hamilton sensation Josh McDonald.

The Yorkshire giants beat off competition from Premier League and Championship sides to sign the 16-year-old midfielder for a fee of around £150,000.

Leeds are already well-stocked with promising defenders and are seeking to add another with a move for Mercer.

They swooped to bring Portugal Under-18 international Diogo Monteiro to the club in January, and he has been progressing well with the Under-21 side in the second half of the 2022-23 campaign.

Charlie Cresswell and Leo Hjelde are also set to return from respective loan spells at Millwall and Rotherham this summer.

Leeds have placed a big emphasis on signing the best young talent since returning to the Premier League – and have also completed deals for highly-rated forwards Sonny Perkins and Mateo Joseph in the last year.

At senior level, the Whites are locked in another fight for their top-flight survival.

Sam Allardyce took interim charge last week and faces games against Newcastle, West Ham and Tottenham with Leeds currently 19th in the table.
