Leeds United midfielder Owen Bray has headed to Barnsley on trial, Football Insider understands.

The midfielder, 19, is set to leave Elland Road this summer after being told he will not be offered a new deal.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Barnsley are rivalling Wigan Athletic to sign Bray in the coming weeks.

He featured for Barnsley Under-23s against Watford at Vicarage Road on Tuesday (3 May) as the Tykes weigh up a move for the Irish youngster.

Football Insider reported last month (23 April) Wigan were leading the race for Bray’s signature after he spent time on trial with their Under-23s side.

But he started the 2-1 loss to the Hornets for Barnsley Under-23s as he looks for a new club.

This site reported last month (19 April) the teenager was set to leave his Leeds United.

His boyhood club triggered a one-year extension to his scholarship last summer (2021) but he was unable to break into their Under-23s side this season.

Bray played several times for various youth sides last season, including the 7-0 hammering by Accrington Stanley in the EFL Trophy.

Barnsley are looking to bolster their ranks as they prepare for League One after being relegated from the Championship.

They are bottom of the division and will end the season there no matter the results on the final day this weekend.

Wigan are set to take their place in the second tier after securing the League One title with a 3-0 win over Shrewsbury Town last weekend (30 April).
