Sources: Leicester City close in on Man United youngster Popov after talks breakthrough

Leicester City are close to signing Man United starlet Chris Popov after reaching an agreement in principle over a deal, Football Insider understands.

The FA Cup holders are putting the finishing touches to the transfer of the Welsh youngster, 16, following a breakthrough in negotiations.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Popov is expected to sign an initial scholarship deal that will be converted into a three-year professional contract when he turns 17.

That will not be until October, with the initial plan for him to link up with the Under-18s before being phased into the Under-23s.

Popov had a spell on trial at Leicester last season but United still hold his registration.

The 20-times Premier League champions have offered new terms to the young forward but the offer from Leicester and a potential move to the King Power Stadium has turned his head.
