Sources: Leicester set to beat Leeds to Soumare signing after breakthrough

Leicester City are the clear frontrunners ahead of Leeds United in the race to sign Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare this summer, Football Insider has learned.

The Foxes are in talks with the French club to land the 22-year-old for a fee of around £18million and are confident of sealing a deal after a breakthrough.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Leeds have also expressed an interest in Soumare as they look to recruit a top-quality central midfielder this summer.

But Leicester are firmly in the driving seat to agree a deal, with the player also keen to head to the King Power Stadium.

Soumare has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Lille and is regarded as one of the brightest talents in French football.

He has also attracted interest from other top Premier League clubs over the last 18 months.

The defensive midfielder snubbed a move to Newcastle United in January of last year after they had a £35million bid accepted by Lille.

The financial troubles of French football mean the newly-crowned Ligue 1 champions have to cash in on Soumare in the upcoming window.

Leicester looked at signing him in January, while Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa knows the rising star after working with him in France.

The Foxes have laid the groundwork for a deal and are looking to add Soumare to their squad as well as exit-bound Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (27th May) that

Soumare made 25 Ligue 1 and Europa League starts among 43 appearances in all competitions for Lille in the 2020-21 season.

The former PSG academy product has made 112 appearances in total for Lille as well as secured 13 France Under-21 caps.

In other news, Kieran Maguire has claimed Leeds United are ready to start work on 55,000-capacity stadium after “49ers finance” injection.
