Sources: Liverpool in talks to terminate Billy Koumetio deal

Liverpool have held talks over terminating Billy Koumetio’s loan deal with Austria Vienna, sources have told Football Insider.

The centre-back, 20, joined the Austrian top-tier club in the summer on a season-long agreement.

Koumetio began the season in the starting XI but the move has turned sour and he has made just one first-team appearance since early September.

Liverpool have discussed the possibility of recalling Koumetio and ending the deal early ahead of the January window.

That would give them the opportunity to find Koumetio a new club in the winter transfer recess.

The defender is highly rated by Jurgen Klopp and has already played twice for the first team as well as for France at Under-20s level.

He made his senior debut for the Merseysiders in the Champions League against Midtjylland in the 2020-21 season.

The starlet followed that appearance up with a start against Leicester in the League Cup quarter-final last term.

However, after making 11 appearances for Austria Vienna earlier this season, the 6ft 5in 20-year-old has been demoted to the club’s Young Violets side – who play in the country’s second division.

Koumetio, who came through the ranks at French giants Olympique Lyonnais, is out of contract at Anfield in June 2025.

The youngster is behind Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, Joe Gomez and Nat Phillips in the senior pecking order at Liverpool.

Klopp’s side return to Premier League action on 26 December against Aston Villa.
