Liverpool are desperate to add a centre-back and central midfielder before next week's 1 September transfer deadline, sources have told Football Insider.

The Reds have already wrapped up deals for Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo so far this summer.

But Jurgen Klopp and transfer chiefs are keen to improve their side even further with a defensive upgrade and reinforcement in the middle of the park.

The Merseysiders have identified plenty of potential options in midfield despite recently missing out on Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo to Chelsea.

Bayern had previously been unwilling to sell the Netherlands international but are believed to have softened that stance in recent days.

Meanwhile, Liverpool have seen an approach for a top centre-back target blocked.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp wants cover and competition for Virgil van Dijk, while he is also keen to refresh the central defensive position for the first time since Ibrahima Konate’s arrival.

Sources told Football Insider earlier this week (22 August) that Liverpool watched long-term defender target Per Schuurs in action for Torino earlier this week.

The Merseysiders have started the 2023-24 campaign with a win and a draw against Bournemouth and Chelsea.

Liverpool face an away clash with Newcastle on Saturday (26 August) in their last game before the 1 September deadline.
