Liverpool are exploring a potential deal for a versatile defender as the January transfer window approaches, sources have told Football Insider.

The Reds are believed to want a defender who can star in multiple roles across their back line and not necessarily as a one-position specialist.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Liverpool regard this search as "key" to their success this season as Trent Alexander-Arnold's role rapidly evolves.

Liverpool

Alexander-Arnold, who broke through as a right-back, is more frequently moving into midfield for Jurgen Klopp's side as the German tries to exploit his creative ability.

As such, Klopp is keen to bolster his defence with left-back Andy Robertson out with a long-term shoulder injury.

The Scot's absence has highlighted the relative fragility of Liverpool's squad depth - and that is something the Merseysiders are keen to remedy in January.

Joe Gomez played at left-back and was less than impressive offensively as Klopp's side drew 1-1 against Luton on Sunday (5 November).

Kostas Tsimikas had started in the previous two Premier League games but was dropped for the Hatters clash.

The 25-year-old is out of contract on the south coast at the end of the season.

He can play both at centre-back and left-back and has Premier League experience following his Cherries arrival in 2019.

Liverpool

Liverpool sit third in the Premier League following their draw at Kenilworth Road.

Klopp's side face Toulouse in the Europa League on Thursday (9 November) before facing Brentford on Sunday (12 November).
