Nottingham Forest look set to miss out on Union Berlin striker Taiwo Awoniyi, Football Insider understands.

The Premier League newcomers have made the former Liverpool forward a top target after learning of a £17.2million release clause in his contract.

But a recruitment source has told Football Insider that Awoniyi is planning to reject the interest from Forest amid interest from multiple other clubs in his signature.

Nottingham Forest

Awoniyi scored 15 Bundesliga goals last season to help Union Berlin to a fifth-place finish.

During his time on the books at Anfield, the 24-year-old had seven loan spells, at clubs in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, before joining Union Berlin in a permanent deal in 2021.

It was at Union where he found his best form, scoring 20 goals in all competitions during the 2021-22 season.

He initially joined the club on loan from Liverpool in the summer of 2020, scoring five goals in 22 games during that campaign.

Due to his form in Germany, Awoniyi is now a full Nigeria international with four caps to his name.

He led the line for the Super Eagles throughout the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations though he could only find the back of the net once.

Nottingham Forest

Forest begin their first Premier League campaign since 1998-99 against Newcastle United at St James' Park on 6 August.

Steve Cooper's side are yet to make a senior signing this summer.
