West Ham have a genuine interest in Ajax captain Steven Bergwijn this month as they explore a £15million-plus deal, sources have told Football Insider.

The 26-year-old ex-Tottenham star is a target for the Irons as they vie to improve their attacking options in the winter window.

Ajax are set to put a big valuation on Bergwijn's head to ward off interest from West Ham - meaning David Moyes' side may have to pay in excess of £15million to land the Netherlands international.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that nothing is advanced in terms of a potential agreement between West Ham, Ajax and the player.

It is believed a deal could depend on a potential exit for Irons forward Said Benrahma - with his suitors not ready to sanction a permanent deal for the Algeria international.

Sources say all three sides prefer a loan-to-buy deal for the 28-year-old.

Bergwijn is experienced in the Premier League after spending two and a half years with Tottenham, notching eight goals and 10 assists in 83 appearances in all competitions.

He has managed eight goals and three assists in 20 games for struggling Ajax this term.

The left-winger, who can also play as a centre-forward, is under contract in Amsterdam until June 2027.

West Ham moved to sign two Ajax stars in the last summer window, bringing both Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus to London for big fees.

The Hammers are sixth in the Premier League table ahead of their next top-flight fixture against Sheffield United on 21 January.

Moyes' side are in action in the Europa League knockout stages from March.
