Manchester United are close to signing Sporting Lisbon attacking midfielder midfielder Bruno Fernandes, Football Insider understands.
The 24-year-old is being chased by some of Europe’s elite clubs on the back of a remarkable campaign in which scored 32 goals and supplied 18 assists for his side in 53 matches.
A United source has told Football Insider that they are in pole position to seal the capture of Fernandes, who had an £88.5million release clause inserted into the contract he signed last summer.
The Premier League giants have not offered to pay the mammoth clause but have made it clear in negotiations with Sporting they are willing to pay more than £50million for him.
That could be enough to seal the deal and make him United’s first signing of what is expected to be a busy summer of recruitment following a wretched campaign.
Fernandes is in demand after taking his game to a new level this season at Sporting, who he helped win the Taca de Portugal as they beat Porto on penalties in the final last week.
The 11-times Portugal international was outstanding in all competitions, with 20 of his goals coming in the domestic league, putting him second only to Benfica star Haris Seferovic.
Fernandes also topped the league assists charts with 13, and his performances in the Europa League also alerted him to United’s recruitment team.
In other Man United news, it can be REVEALED that star club goalkeeper has agreed the terms of a long-term deal with a big pay hike.
