Sources: Man United could sell McTominay to generate 'big' cash for January signing

Man United could sanction the sale of Scott McTominay in January to raise funds for new arrivals, sources have told Football Insider.

McTominay started for the first time this season for the 3-1 home loss against Brighton on Saturday (16 September) – but is not believed to feature prominently in Erik ten Hag’s plans.

Man United will need to be financially savvy to bring in any reinforcements in January following a summer window of big spending.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the potential sale of McTominay would generate “big funds” despite his second-string status at Old Trafford.

Several Premier League clubs were interested in signing the 26-year-old in the summer window but an exit did not materialise.

Since then, Sofyan Amrabat has arrived on a loan-to-buy basis – pushing McTominay further down the pecking order.

Bayern Munich have become the latest side to be linked with a potential deal for the Scotland international.

The German giants are reportedly set to turn attention to the Man United star after top target Joao Palhinha signed a new deal at Fulham.

McTominay made 39 appearances across all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign – but managed only 16 starts in those outings.

This season, he has played 92 minutes of football across three appearances.

He has amassed 147 Premier League appearances since coming through the ranks at Old Trafford.

Man United are back in action in the Champions League on Wednesday (20 September) – facing McTominay’s potential suitors Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils have managed just six points from a possible 15 in the Premier League this term.
