Man United favourite Michael Carrick has spoken to Lincoln City about their vacant manager's job, Football Insider understands.

The League One outfit are looking for a new manager after Michael Appleton stepped down from the role after the final game of the campaign.

An industry source has told Football Insider that Carrick, 40, is keen for a permanent manager role after being Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer’s number two at Man United and briefly holding the reigns as a caretaker.

He has held preliminary talks with Lincoln and is weighing up the interest.

Carrick was unbeaten in his three games in temporary charge of United before he announced his departure from the club when Ralf Rangnick took over in December.

It brought to an end a 15-year association with the Premier League giants as a player and coach where he won every domestic trophy as well as the Champions League and Europa League.

Appleton left Lincoln at the end of the League One season after three campaigns with the club.

The high point came in the 2020-21 season when he guided them to the play-off final but after a difficult start this term, the Imps finished down in 17th-place, 12 points clear of the relegation places.

Carrick would not be the first member of Solskjaer's backroom staff to take a League One job if he takes over at Sincil Bank as Kieran McKenna was named as Ipswich Town boss last December (2021).
