Sources: Man United ready to trigger Erik ten Hag release clause and announce him next week

Man United are set to trigger Erik ten Hag’s Ajax release clause after deciding to make him their new manager, Football Insider understands.

The Dutchman, 52, has been identified by United as their number one target ahead of Mauricio Pochettino and talks have been held over a potential deal.

A United source has told Football Insider that Ten Hag is, in turn, expected to accept their offer to replace interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

The Premier League giants will then turn to finalising negotiations with Ajax and managing the delicate situation of announcing him while the season is still live.

It has been suggested behind the scenes at Old Trafford that an announcement will be made as early as next week, in the aftermath of Ajax’s KNVB Cup final clash against PSV Eindhoven on Sunday.

The Dutch club are not well placed to fend off Man United as Ten Hag has a release clause in his contract believed to be worth £1.7million.

His current deal with de Godenzonen is set to expire in the summer of 2023.

Man United’s hopes of finishing in the top-four took a heavy blow on Saturday (9 April) as they lost 1-0 to Everton.

As quoted by Sky Sports, Rangnick admitted Ten Hag is a “top coach” when pressed about his appointment before the game.

Ten Hag joined the Dutch giants in December 2017 and has won two league titles with the club.

Victory on Sunday would also be his third success in the KNVB Cup with a league/cup double still on the cards.
