Sources: Middlesbrough defender set to join Crewe in last-gasp loan deal

Middlesbrough defender Nathan Wood is set to join Crewe Alexandra on loan, Football Insider can reveal.

The 18-year-old has been given the green light to leave the Riverside ahead of tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline in search of regular first team football.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Crewe are closing in on the capture of the teenager on loan for the remainder of the season.

Wood has made seven appearances for Neil Warnock’s side this season of which four have been starts.

He stepped into the starting eleven against Rotherham last week after Dael Fry suffered a nasty injury in the loss against Blackburn Rovers a few days earlier.

However, it did not go as planned with Boro beaten 3-0 by the Championship strugglers.

A product of Boro’s academy, Wood has made played 11 times for the first team since his debut against Notts County in August 2018.

He is held in high regard by the staff at Middlesbrough and has been capped by England at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-18 level.

The club believe a loan will be best for the young centre-half’s development having had a taste of Championship action this season.

Crewe are in dire need of defensive reinforcements this month having lost Perry Ng and Harry Pickering to Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers respectively.

The Railwaymen are currently 10th in League One, three points off of the Play-Off spots.
