Sources: Middlesbrough plot new move for Hull City star Jacob Greaves as talks held

Middlesbrough are plotting a new move for Hull City defender Jacob Greaves after their initial approach was rejected, sources have told Football Insider.

Boro boss Chris Wilder has made the 21-year-old his top target as he looks to bring in a new left-sided centre-back before the close of the transfer window.

Hull are reluctant to lose Greaves and are in talks with the defender over a new deal.

His current contract is due to expire next summer.

Greaves impressed for the Tigers last season, playing every minute of every game in the Championship.

Watford have also reportedly shown an interest in the young centre-back – but have apparently moved on after baulking at Hull’s asking price of up to £7million.

However, promotion-chasing Middlesbrough could open their chequebook in the latter stages of the window after raking in almost £25million with the sales of Djed Spence and Marcus Tavernier.

Greaves made his breakthrough as an 18-year-old on loan at Cheltenham during the 2019-20 season, making 35 appearances in League Two.

The defender was then vital for his parent club in the 2020-21 campaign as Hull returned to the Championship as League One winners.

He has been ever-present since and played 90 minutes yet again during Saturday’s (30 July) curtain-raising 2-1 win over Bristol City.

Middlesbrough are in the market for centre-back reinforcements after losing Nathan Wood, Grant Hall, and Sol Bamba during the off-season.

The Teessiders started the new campaign with a 1-1 draw at home against West Brom.
