Middlesbrough are recalling goalkeeper Sol Brynn from his loan at Queen of the South, Football Insider understands.

Boro boss Chris Wilder wants the 21-year-old back to challenge the keepers at the Riverside Stadium.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that the northeast club have high hopes for Brynn following his impressive spell at the Scottish club and they are set to terminate his loan in the January window.

The youngster has started all 16 of Queens' games this term, conceding 22 goals.

Brynn has kept five clean sheets for the struggling Dumfries side, who sit eighth in the second tier.

The 21-year-old has also played a key role in Queen of the South's run to the semi-finals of the Scottish Challenge Cup.

The goalkeeper is following in the footsteps of Middlesbrough winger Isaiah Jones, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Boro following a loan spell with the Doonhamers during the second half of last term.

Following his performances for Boro's youth sides, Brynn signed a fresh three-year deal at the Riverside Stadium in July of last year.

The Teessiders hold the option of an additional year.

The youngster's recall will allow him to compete with first-choice stopper Joe Lumley - who has kept nine clean sheets in 18 Championship outings this term.

Luke Daniels has also played six times in the second tier for Boro this term.
