Sources: Rarely-seen West Ham player set for major role after two big developments

By Wayne Veysey

Xande Silva is set for a major role at West Ham as Manuel Pellegrini prepares to fast-track him into the first team next month, Football Insider understands.

The Portugese forward, 22, has played only twice for the Hammers after signing from Vitoria Guimaraes for £1.3 million in August 2018.

A West Ham source has told Football Insider that Pellegrini plans to promote him into the senior side when he has fully recovered from an emergency bowel operation he underwent in the summer.

Silva is set to be back playing again this time next month and has already been added to the club’s Premier League squad this week.

Pellegrini has been impressed by Silva’s ability to penetrate defences and believes he will be ready for the first team after spending most of his debut season in the Under-23s.

The Hammers manager is in need of fresh attacking faces following the sale of Javier Hernandez to Sevilla on Monday and the shattering injury blow sustained by Michail Antonio last week.

As revealed by Football Insider last Friday, Antonio’s scan results showed he will be sidelined for four months with a torn hamstring.

He has already undergone surgery and started what is set to be a lengthy rehabilitation period.

In other West Ham news, it can be REVEALED that the club have agreed the terms of a stunning £26million deal.
