Newcastle and Aston Villa are leading the race to sign Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips this summer, Football Insider understands.

The midfielder’s future is up in the air with Leeds batting for Premier League survival and talks over a new contract stalled.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Newcastle and Villa have made Phillips a top target and are both doing the groundwork for potential deals.

Man United are also keen to sign the England international but are not as well placed to seal a deal. Much will depend on whether Leeds stay up and avoid the possibility of having to cash in on their home-grown star.

The 26-year-old was pictured still out on the Elland Road turf with Raphinha long after the final whistle in Sunday's (15 May) 1-1 draw with Brighton by BBC Leeds' Jonathan Buchan.

The reporter also suggested Phillips may have been taking in the surroundings at Elland Road for the final time as a Leeds player.

Phillips has only made 19 appearances in the Premier League this season after being struck down by a hamstring injury in early December.

He returned on 2 April but has only been able to help his side win one game in the seven appearances he has made since.

As it stands, he is a one-club man, making 234 total appearances for the Whites.

Leeds United

The Whites rescued a draw against Brighton on Sunday (15 May) thanks to a late Pascal Struijk header.

The result leaves Leeds one point above the relegation zone though 18th-placed Burnley have a game in hand.
