Newcastle United and Brighton are plotting moves to sign Feyenoord defender Marcos Senesi, Football Insider understands.

Eddie Howe’s side are ready to turn their attention to the Argentine, 24, after being frustrated so far in their attempts to bring in a new centre-back this month.

They face competition from Brighton, who are also an admirer of the left-sided centre-back.

Newcastle

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Newcastle and Brighton are ready to test Feyenoord's resolve to hang on to Senesi.

He has entered the final 18 months of his contract at De Kuip stadium and an offer of £16.8million would be enough to seal a deal this month.

The Magpies are keen to sign two centre-halves this month after shipping 42 goals in the first half of the season - more than any other side in the Premier League.

Bids for Lille's Sven Botman and Sevilla's Diego Carlos have been so far unsuccessful with both clubs valuing their players at over £35million.

Newcastle have managed to bolster their defence with the addition of Kieran Trippier this month.

The right-back put pen to paper on a two-and-a-half year deal at St. James' Park after an £18million deal was agreed with Atletico Madrid.

Brighton are also in the market for a centre-half this January having still not replaced Ben White, who joined Arsenal in a £50million deal at the end of July.

Senesi has been one of the standout performers in the Eredivisie this season.

He has contributed two goals and three assists in 28 games across all competitions.
