Sources: Newcastle lay foundations for three 'big-money' January signings as Howe plan revealed
Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe is setting his sights on a triple January swoop to stiffen the spine of the team, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.
The newly-appointed boss will be backed with major funds in the upcoming mid-season window as the Saudi-owned club look to stave off relegation.
A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that Howe’s priority is to recruit two centre-backs and a central midfielder proven at the highest level.
The 43-year-old and the United hierarchy discussed potential areas of the squad to strengthen before his appointment earlier the week.
Howe made it clear that the team needs proven reinforcements in the centre of its defence and midfield if they are to pull clear of the bottom three.
Howe played down the significance of the January window when he was presented to the media this week.
But, behind the scenes, targets are being identified as the club lay the foundations for potential moves with big money set to be made available.
It comes as United work on finalising the appointment of a director of football, who can oversee recruitment in January.
As revealed by Football Insider on Tuesday, the club are in advanced talks with ex-Chelsea technical director Michael Emenalo and are confident of finalising a deal.
The club are preparing for a major recruitment drive in January amid growing concerns over their top-flight status.
Newcastle are winless from 11 Premier League matches this season and went into the international break five points adrift of safety with 27 games still to play.
In other news, Newcastle United have agreed terms with proven Premier League operator ahead of January.
