Sources: Newcastle United hit by £22m blow as Tonali wage revealed

Newcastle United have added £22million onto their wage bill this summer, Football Insider can reveal.

The Magpies enjoyed an extremely successful 2022/23 season with a top-four finish in the Premier League, but have seen their monthly expenses rise as a result.

As reported by The Athletic, the new Saudi Arabian owners at St James’ Park included lucrative bonuses for Newcastle players if they qualified for Europe.

Unlike other top-flight clubs, these bonuses were agreed between players and the club on a case-by-case basis.

Football Insider understands that Champions League wage bonuses have added £15million to Newcastle’s annual wage bill.

It is a relatively modest increase considering Newcastle’s wage bill in 2021/22 sat at £171million - 95 per cent of the club’s turnover.

Newcastle’s wage-to-turnover ratio is set to drop however, with the North East club also set to enjoy a significant revenue increase as a result of their Champions League qualification.

On top of the Champions League wage bonuses, Newcastle invested heavily this summer to improve their first-team squad with Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall joining Eddie Howe’s squad.

These four additions are set to add £13.5million to Newcastle’s wage bill, with Tonali the highest earner in the list with an annual wage of £6.2million - £120,000 per week.

Barnes is set to earn £4.1million per year at Newcastle, while Livramento’s £50,000 per week wages will add £2.6million to the annual bill.

However, the sales of Allan Saint-Maximin, Chris Wood and Karl Darlow and a number of loan deals have helped to balance the books by trimming £7million off of Newcastle’s wages.

Overall, Football Insider calculates that Newcastle’s wage bill is set for a £22million increase compared to before the 2023 summer window.
