Newcastle United are preparing a club-record Bruno Guimaraes contract offer, sources have told Football Insider.

The north-east giants are planning to make the midfielder the best-paid player in their history to keep him.

Guimaraes, 24, joined Newcastle in January from Lyon for £40million and signed a contract worth around £120,000-a-week.

That deal runs until 2026, but the club are already looking to improve and extend it on the back of the huge impact made by the Brazilian.

It is believed Newcastle are willing to offer Guimaraes a huge pay hike that would take him to around £200,000-a-week and extend it by two more years.

Should a deal be agreed, it would cost the club an eye-watering £60m in wages alone.

Newcastle's best-paid current player is Kieran Trippier, who is on around £145,000-a-week.

He joined from Atletico Madrid in January as Newcastle began the overhaul of a playing squad that is already paying dividends.

The right-back paved the way for the headline capture of Guimaraes, who is emerging as a firm fans favourite.

He enhanced his reputation with a memorable double as Newcastle demolished Brentford 5-1 last Saturday.

In 24 matches for United, Guimaraes has already scored seven goals despite his relatively deep role.

In addition to his goalscoring, it is his dynamism, enthusiasm and technical quality that is making him a stand-out as well as the poster boy for Eddie Howe's emerging team.
