Newcastle United are monitoring Andreas Christensen's situation at La Liga giants Barcelona ahead of a potential January deal, sources have told Football Insider.

The Magpies are keen to add a new centre-back and Christensen, 27, is a name that features high on their wanted list.

However, it is believed it will be a hard deal to do for Newcastle in January due to their Financial Fair Play restrictions.

Eddie Howe and his recruitment staff have made a central midfielder the priority for this month following Sandro Tonali's season-long ban.

But Newcastle are nonetheless keeping a watchful eye on Christensen, who is in and out of Xavi's Barcelona side at present.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that Howe is a "big admirer" of the Denmark international.

The 27-year-old, who is under contract until June 2026, has made 20 appearances across all competitions this season but has not been able to string together a consistent run of starts for Barca.

He joined the Catalan giants in 2022 and helped them win La Liga ahead of rivals Real Madrid last term.

Christensen left Chelsea 18 months ago after making 161 appearances during his time at Stamford Bridge.

He won the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League during his time with the Blues.

Newcastle

Newcastle, who have both Sven Botman and Fabian Schar back to full fitness, sit ninth in the Premier League table after 20 games.

The Magpies are next in action against Man City on Saturday (13 January).
