Sources: Newcastle United set aside 'huge sum' for box-office January signing
Newcastle United have set aside a “huge sum” for a box-office January signing, sources have told Football Insider.
The north-east giants are in the market for reinforcements in the upcoming window as they look to build upon their impressive start to the season.
Newcastle have spent big in the two windows since the Saudi Arabia-led PiF takeover and the team has been transformed.
There will be no repeat of the vast overhaul of January 2022, when United were one of the biggest spenders in Europe, shelling out £90million on five players, as per The Telegraph (23 March).
But PiF have given the green light for Dan Ashworth and his recruitment team to bring in one or two stars who can instantly improve the team as they step up their bid to qualify for Europe and even potentially a Champions League place.
Newcastle have deep pockets under their new ownership and “huge” money will be available if needed, a source told Football Insider.

The club’s transfer record has already been broken by the new owners as Alexander Isak arrived from Real Sociedad in the final weeks of the summer transfer window.
Sky Sports (26 August) reported that the deal is worth £63million.
However, after starting three games straight after joining the club, the striker picked up an injury and will not play again until after the World Cup.
Isak was the most recent of the nine senior signings the Saudi ownership has made since October 2021’s controversial takeover.
Newcastle sit fourth in the Premier League ahead of this weekend’s (5 November) matches.
They will end the weekend in the third if, on Sunday (6 November) the Magpies win at Southampton and Tottenham lose to Liverpool.
