The top two Newcastle United targets in January are James Maddison and Christian Pulisic, sources have told Football Insider.

The attacking duo head the United shopping list as the club's Saudi owners prepare to back Eddie Howe again in the window that opens on Sunday.

Newcastle's recruitment team have identified Leicester City playmaker Maddison and Chelsea winger Pulisic as players who can slot straight into their starting XI and improve it.

Newcastle

The north-east giants are willing to bide their time and wait until the summer for both players if they cannot agree deals for them in January.

Newcastle's Saudi-backed owners PiF are keen to build on the momentum of an excellent Premier League campaign by strengthening Eddie Howe’s squad.

There will not be a repeat of the blizzard of activity last January but the plan is to strengthen in key areas that will improve the team in the short and long term.

United failed to land Maddison in the summer after tabling offers of over £40m.

However, Maddison is out of contract at Leicester in the summer of 2024, which places his long-term future at the club in severe doubt.

Chelsea

Chelsea would consider selling Pulisic for around £40million, a similar fee to the one they paid Borussia Dortmund in 2019.

Manchester United and Arsenal are also monitoring the player’s situation but would prefer a loan, while the Blues only want a permanent departure.
